BURBANK — From Hart football’s second offensive possession of the game, it was clear quarterback Jacob Paisano had his eye on wide receiver Parker Maxwell.
After a Burroughs fumble on its first opportunity with the ball, Paisano looked Maxwell’s way on the very next play, finding the senior wideout for a high-flying 27-yard touchdown grab.
A possession later, it was the same story.
Paisano lasered a pass to Maxwell near the left sideline, who powered through a defender for an additional 8 yards after the catch, completing the 19-yard touchdown play.
Maxwell finished with eight catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns to lead Hart to a 38-19 win over Burroughs. He had catches of 47, 41 and 38 yards.
“We’ve had this connection for a long time, it goes back to freshman year when we were on the JV team together,” Paisano said. “Every time the ball is in the air to him, he comes down with it.”
“I like to say if I’m even I’m leaving, that’s my saying,” Maxwell said. “Jacob can just put it up there and I’m going up there to get it.”
Paisano finished with 232 passing yards, two touchdown passes to Maxwell and a rushing score of his own.
The offensive line gave Paisano time in the pocket to operate and also helped open up running lanes for running back Zach Rogozik.
Led by the starters Wade Cobbs IV, Kameron Warner, Jared Trujillo, Nathan Bellith and Andrew Webster, the offense operated without a hitch because of the offensive line play.
“I’m an offensive lineman at heart, I played center so I know how hard it is, how difficult it is and these guys are the most coachable kids,” Hart head coach Jake Goossen-Brown said.”
“It starts with them, I think they’re the heart of this team, everything we do revolves around them,” Paisano added.
It wasn’t just the passing game that was working for the Hawks.
Rogozik paced the offense early for Hart, ripping off large chunks on the way to 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
He ran for 100 yards in the first half alone, piling up long runs of 31 yards, 20 yards and 17 yards.
Burroughs was led by its running back Matteo Tarca, who ran the ball 24 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 40 yards.
The Hart victory marks the first for Goossen-Brown in his first season with the program.
And it was the first game in Hart’s all-white jerseys as well.
“Being able to get that win for coach, for us. Tonight we debuted our all-white uniforms so it was nice to make a stand with that,” said Oliver Welch, Hart’s captain for the week. “Practice was a vibe change to say the least this past week. It’s great to get that win for coach Goose.”
“It’s always great to win, it’s a testament to what these kids have done. They’ve worked their tails off,” Goossen-Brown said. “I always tell everybody they do it all. I get to stand here and look pretty on a Friday night when they put in the work. They make me look good. I’m excited they got to come out and show what they got tonight.”
Hart will look to make it two in a row next week at home against Paraclete. Burroughs will play Harvard-Westlake on the road.
