MAMARONECK, N.Y. (PIX11) – The driver of a school bus that hit and killed a mother and her 6-year-old son in Westchester County in June will not face criminal charges, authorities said Friday.
The crash happened in Mamaroneck back on June 20. The school bus was traveling eastbound on New Street, turning left onto Mamaroneck Avenue, and hit and killed the child and his 43-year-old mother in the crosswalk, according to police.
After an investigation, the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday that the bus driver will not be charged, calling the crash a “tragic accident” that wasn’t “criminal in nature.”
“The investigation included an accident reconstruction by the [Westchester County Department of Public Safety], interviews with the driver of the bus and other witnesses and the review of video and vehicle, toxicology and medical reports,” a statement from the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office said.
The bus was heading to Mamaroneck Avenue School to drop off students when the crash occurred, police said.
The boy who died was a kindergarten student at Mamaroneck Avenue School.
