OAKLAND — A man walking in the roadway died Thursday night after he was hit by a vehicle in East Oakland that failed to remain at the scene, police said.
The name of the man killed has not yet been released pending confirmation of his name and notification of his family. He is believed to be in his 70s and an Oakland resident, authorities said.
The fatal collision happened about 9:33 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of 98th and Bancroft avenues.
Police said a silver two-door hatchback vehicle, possibly a Honda, was driving southbound on 98th Avenue approaching Bancroft Avenue when it hit the man, who according to witnesses was walking in and out of traffic. The impact knocked the man some 50 feet into the middle of the intersection, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead from major head injuries, authorities said.
The vehicle continued driving southbound on 98th Avenue, police said. A detailed description of the driver was not released.
Police said it is not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors in what happened.
