Ossel is a minimal home located near Brussels, Belgium, designed by Objekt Architecten. In the pastoral outskirts of Brussels, a venerable farmhouse has undergone a transformative renaissance, marrying its century-old charm with contemporary design sensibilities. This long-gabled structure, steeped in history, now stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of heritage and modernity. The renovation, while preserving the original edifice’s footprint, ushered in a dramatic reimagining of the interior spaces. A cherished fireplace, once the heart of the sitting room, remains as a nostalgic centerpiece amidst the newly crafted patio. The original fenestration, retained with reverence, serves as a visual bridge between the old and new, linking the historic facade to a bold rear extension.
This modern addition, necessitated by the constraints of the existing structure, unfurls at the back and eastern flank of the farmhouse. It boasts generous apertures that frame expansive vistas of the surrounding gardens, creating a striking contrast to the more modest windows of its predecessor. The extension’s stepped silhouette, clad in materials that seamlessly transition from exterior to interior, blurs the boundaries between indoors and out. Within this new volume, each space is imbued with purpose. Dark wood paneling, consistent throughout, unifies the aesthetic while delineating distinct functional areas. A sinuous circulation path traces the old rear facade, orchestrating a captivating dialogue between past and present. The home office, a sanctuary of productivity, comprises dual workspaces and a meeting room, accessible independently to maintain the sanctity of private life.
The kitchen, basking in the glow of morning light through its soaring glass facade, occupies a double-height space adjacent to the eastern patio. On the opposite end, the master suite opens onto a sheltered outdoor retreat, complemented by a luxurious dressing area and bathroom. Above, the upper floor houses three additional bedrooms, auxiliary facilities, and cleverly renovated dormers, with new glass walls ushering in abundant natural light. The social heart of the home—the lounge and dining areas—resides within the new extension, maximizing the connection to the verdant surroundings. While the farmhouse’s timeless essence endures, judicious modern interventions, including strategic illumination and panoramic views, infuse the property with contemporary sophistication.
