The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) has said that it has begun the process of obtaining ISO accreditation to enhance its credibility and further solidify its commitment to upholding international standards in materials testing across the state.
According to the Agency’s General Manager, Engr. Olayinka Abdul, the laboratory has benchmarked its processes and procedures against global best practices in credible materials testing.
Speaking during a press conference held on Wednesday at the Agency’s headquarters in Ojodu-Berger, Engr. Abdul emphasised the importance of quality assurance in the construction industry.
She noted that the ISO accreditation process is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and reliability of infrastructure projects in Lagos State. Once accredited the laboratory will be able to offer more globally recognised testing services.
Engr. Abdul expressed confidence in the team of professionals within the Agency, stating that it comprises Geologists, Builders, Quantity surveyors, Civil, Structural, and other specialised Engineers, all capable of driving innovation in materials testing.
During the press conference, the General Manager also highlighted the growing concern over unsafe construction practices in the State, calling for immediate action to curb such dangerous activities.
She noted that Lagos, as a rapidly developing city, is witnessing increasing attempts by individuals to bypass essential materials testing procedures, thereby putting lives and property at risk.
She revealed that the Agency has seen a rise in “sharp practices” where some Residents, Developers, and Contractors attempt to manipulate or circumvent the materials testing process.
“These actions not only threaten the integrity of construction projects but also endanger the lives of citizens who rely on safe and durable infrastructure”, Abdul stated.
The General Manager also condemned the abuse faced by the Agency’s staff, urging an immediate halt to such actions. “Our personnel are being emotionally and, in some cases, physically abused while on duty, and this must stop”.
Engr. Abdul averred the LSMTL’s commitment to enforcing strict testing protocols and regulatory compliance to prevent building collapses, which have become a significant concern in Lagos.
She explained that building collapses and structural failures are often the result of poor quality control and the use of substandard materials, assuring that LSMTL aims to address these issues with more rigorous testing and inspection protocols.
She further reiterated its commitment to partnering with key stakeholders in the construction sector, including Contractors, Engineers, and Regulatory bodies, to foster a culture of safety and compliance.
