The Maharashtra government’s plan to erect a statue of Sachin Tendulkar’s childhood coach, Ramakant Achrekar, at Shivaji Park was welcomed on Thursday by the renowned cricket player.
On Wednesday, the state’s urban development department authorized the plan to erect a six-foot statue of Achrekar close to Shivaji Park’s Gate No. 5.
Tendulkar developed his abilities to become one of the greatest batters in history at Shivaji Park.
“Achrekar Sir has had an immense impact on my life and several other lives. I am speaking on behalf of all his students,” Tendulkar wrote on Instagram.
“His life revolved around cricket in Shivaji Park. Being at Shivaji Park forever is what he would have wished for. I am very happy with the government’s decision to build a statue for Achrekar Sir at his karmabhoomi,” Tendulkar added.
The statue’s construction would be handled by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the government stated in its resolution.
“Before erecting the said memorial sculpture, all necessary permissions/ approvals as per the rules/ regulations should be obtained from the Commissioner, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation,” added the notice.
“After the construction of the said memorial sculpture, the responsibility of its necessary maintenance and repair and provision of necessary funds will remain the responsibility of BV Ramath Memorial Secret Club,” stated the statement.
“Independent funds will not be available from the government for construction as well as maintenance and repair of the said memorial,” the resolution added.
Achrekar received the Dronacharya Award in 1990 after coaching twelve players from India.
In addition to Tendulkar, he also served as a coach for the following players: Ajit Agarkar, Paras Mhambrey, Sanjay Bangar, Chandrakant Pandit, Pravin Amre, Sameer Dighe, Lalchand Rajput, Ramnath Parkar, and Vinod Kambli.
