HARD-UP families will feel their lives improve over the next five years, Sir Keir Starmer has insisted.
On his Berlin visit yesterday, the PM hit back at claims that he envisions only a gloomy future.
He promised that people would feel better off by the end of this parliament.
Sir Keir vowed to “inject some hope” into the nation amid cost of living misery.
He pledged that “things will get better” after ministers clear out the economic “rot” left by the previous government.
The PM said: “We can bring about the change that we need.
“If you don’t clear out the rot and don’t do it properly, you’ve got nothing to build on, and therefore this is a vital step.
“I accept that having to say that things are going to get worse before they get better is not what any Prime Minister wants to say.
“But they will get better.”
The PM compared his plan to improve public services and boost treasury coffers to refurbishing a mouldy house.
He insisted that if you want to improve a home, “it’s usually better if you strip it down, get rid of the damp and the cracks first, rather than painting it in five minutes”.
Sir Keir added: “This is actually a project of hope, but it’s got to start with the hard yards of doing the difficult stuff, of clearing out the rot first.”
