DUBLIN — A 30-year-old inmate at the Santa Rita Jail was found dead in his cell on Saturday, authorities said.
An Alameda County sheriff’s deputy found Abrion William McElmore about 12:40 p.m. unresponsive in his cell, according to a statement from sheriff’s office spokesperson Capt. Tya Modeste. Paramedics and other rescue personnel worked to revive him, but he never regained consciousness.
Authorities pronounced him dead at 1:02 p.m., Modeste said.
Deputies arrested McElmore and booked him into the jail about 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 9, 2022. Modeste said he was arrested on suspicion of forcible rape, assault, burglary, trespassing and drug charges.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office also will investigate.
The death was the first of two in Bay Area jails over a 48-hour period. An inmate also died Monday afternoon at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond.
