The International Cricket Council (ICC) has elected Jay Shah as its next chair, as anticipated. His tenure will start on December 1. Shah was the lone candidate to succeed Greg Barclay as the directors’ nomination period expired on Tuesday. Shah, 35, will become the youngest person to occupy the position. He will also have to resign from his position as secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) because he has been assigned to an independent post at the ICC.
Shah’s promotion occurs at a critical juncture for the sport, which will participate in its first Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. As ICC Chair, he will serve a three-year term with a three-year extension option. With six years ahead of him, Shah has the chance to capitalize on the strong fan base and rising consumption value of cricket to establish the game as a genuinely global sport.

He became a member of the Gujarat Cricket Association’s executive board in 2009 and was appointed joint-secretary in 2013. He was chosen to serve as the BCCI secretary in 2019, a role he still holds today. In addition, he leads the Asian Cricket Council as its president.
Shah, who will be the fifth Indian– Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, Shashank Manohar–to hold the highest office, also has plenty of challenges ahead of him as cricket is struggling to hit the right balance between the three formats. Shah said more focus will be given to preserve the health of Test cricket. “While the T20 is a naturally exciting format, it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone as it forms the bedrock of our game. We must see to it that cricketers are driven to the longer format and our efforts will be channelised towards this goal,” he said.
Despite concerns that Shah’s appointment might increase the BCCI’s influence at the ICC, he has already made a move to win over the fraternity by proposing the introduction of a special fund to support Test cricket. Test cricket players will get $10,000 from the common pool as part of an initiative by Cricket Australia that has the backing of the BCCI and ECB. This is anticipated to be Shah’s first significant choice.
While it would be ideal to establish a special fund for Test matches, Shah will also need to deal with the difficulties of maintaining the players’ satisfaction. The World Cricketers Association has established a second committee to investigate scheduling, as players feel that the bilateral ODIs and T20Is provide no background information.
