Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have differing opinions on what Dominic Solanke needs to deliver this season in order to be considered a successful signing for Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs showed on Saturday against Everton that they are a formidable side even without their record signing, with Solanke forced to watch on from the sidelines after picking up an injury as the Lilywhites put four past the Toffees.
The 26-year-old would have been ruing the fact that he was not on the pitch to get to the end of the numerous opportunities that Tottenham created against Sean Dyche’s men.
The centre-forward, who looked extremely lively in his Tottenham debut against Leicester City last Monday, will be keen to get his first goal for the club out of the way so that the pressure lifts and he can play with freedom.
Carragher believes that Solanke needs to match the tally of 19 Premier League goals he got at the Vitality Stadium last season to be considered a successful signing.
The Liverpool legend told Sky Sports’ YouTube channel: “I think he has to match the goals he scored last season for him to be a success, for me.”
Neville then said: “I’m more thinking of the impact he will have for Spurs. Being a focal point, the pressing and the he plays generally, I think he’ll have a big impact for Spurs. If he can get 13 or 14 goals this season, then he would be worth the fee.”
Carragher then responded: “Not enough. That’s my point. If you are paying £65m for someone, you want more than 13 or 14 Premier League goals.”

Both Neville and Carragher make fair points here. Ultimately, what is important is whether Tottenham succeed as a team but given the fee that the club have paid for Solanke, he will be judged as a flop if he fails to get at least 15 goals this season.
