I’m the first to admit I’ve long been a bit of a skeptic when it comes to bed-in-a-box mattresses. In the early 2010s, the mattress-in-a-box concept became the hottest trend in the sleep industry. New brands emerged with promises of quality and comfort from what was little more than a rolled-up slab of memory foam delivered to your door on a wing and a prayer. While these early options were significantly more affordable and offered a convenient shopping experience compared to traditional big-box stores, they often left many wanting more in terms of quality and comfort.
Fast forward to the present day, and while some value offerings reminiscent of the early bed-in-a-box days still exist, the market has matured significantly. Premium brands like Logan & Cove have entered the space offering what’s been called Canada’s best mattress by several reputable sources. Being long overdue to replace my overpriced big-box brand King mattress that I’d acquired less than 5 years ago (a total dud, and one that supposedly had a warranty though the manufacturer refused to come through), it was time to try something new. That newness was the Pinnacle, Logan & Cove’s top-of-the-line hybrid mattress that’s made right here in Canada.
With a retail price under $2,000 ($1,699 for a Queen size), the Pinnacle comes in well under the cost of a similar mattress from other luxury mattress brands on the market. What’s more, its hybrid mattress construction is packed with clever tech to ensure exceptional comfort for a good night’s sleep. Its 6-layer design includes a quilted and cooling Euro-top cover, ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam, two layers of micro coils, premium Elastex® foam, and 3-zone pocketed steel coils with foam encasement.
That’s likely to sound like a bit of techno-jargon to some, but in essence, it boils down to this: its top layer has that supple comfort that hugs you without the deep sink of memory foam; the cooling gel foam prevents you from overheating at night; and the use of micro coils and steel pocket coils gives you the long-lasting support you need all while cutting out any of that unwanted motion transfer that comes from old-school coil mattress designs. Bundled all together, this yields one of the most comfortable mattresses you’ll find out there, especially at this price point.
On the day of delivery, I was met with a rather large box at my front door (quite swiftly, I might add). You don’t really get a sense of how much a mattress can be compressed until you see one fully vacuum-sealed. Word to the wise: you’ll want to follow Logan & Cove’s advice and have someone at home to help you move it, as that box is a heavy one. Also, if your bedroom is on the second floor, do not open the packaging until the sealed mattress is in the room where it’s meant to live permanently.
Once unwrapped, the mattress took its full and proper form in well under an hour. According to Logan & Cove, it should reach its full intended comfort within 24 hours. I unpacked it around midday and didn’t notice any lack of comfort on my first night’s sleep.
The proof is in the pudding, so they say, and my benchmarks for the Logan & Cove Pinnacle hybrid mattress were set rather high. My previous experiences with memory foam mattresses had been lacklustre, and I have a history of finding more comfort in a firm mattress over any sort of fluffy pillow-top offerings. Boy was I in for a treat. Sitting down on the bed, the first takeaway is the overall structure. The design of its Euro-top cover deletes any sort of rolling edge that comes from conventional pillow-top designs.
As noted previously, soft-top mattresses weren’t typically my go-to, and yet even by the first night, I was sleeping more soundly and consistently than I had in quite some time. I’ve suffered from mild to moderate back pain for the better part of the last year and a half, and even that showed a touch of improvement as I settled into sleeping on the Pinnacle. Typically one to alternate between side and stomach sleeping, my sleep pattern turned more restful, often finding myself waking in the exact same position I dozed off in — a novel concept indeed.
My partner also found themselves at a similar level of satisfaction. In contrast to my past preference for a plank-like mattress, my partner was raised on a healthy diet of marshmallow-like softness, and yet we both equally found our sleep quality improving on the new mattress. Touted as the best mattress for couples in Logan & Cove’s luxury mattress lineup, we can report that we felt zero motion transfer on the Pinnacle.
Now a couple of months in with no signs of change or degradation, I’m comfortable putting to rest any sort of misgivings of this new frontier of bed-in-a-box mattresses. The Logan & Cove Pinnacle is the most comfortable mattress I’ve slept on in quite some time, which is saying a lot given the places that work travel takes me, and the level of luxury hotels that I’ve had the good fortune of resting my head in. Especially considering its approachable sticker price, its 365-night sleep trial, and its 15-year warranty, this thing delivers great value in what I’d easily consider a top-shelf luxury mattress.
