AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Dripping Springs-based country band Midland is performing this weekend to help celebrate and kick off the start of the Longhorns football season.
Midland will headline this year's Longhorn City Limits on Saturday, August 31 ahead of the University of Texas' football opener against Colorado State. Austin band West 22nd is also playing the free gameday concert.
Midland was formed in Dripping Springs in 2016 and consists of lead vocalist Mark Wystrach, lead guitarist Jess Carson and bassist Cameron Duddy. The band became famous for their single "Drinkin' Problem" and gained Grammy and Academy of Country Music Awards nominations for their debut album "On the Rocks."
West 22nd will perform a sort of "home show" for the event, as the band is made up of UT students Logan Madsen, Gabe Acevedo and Jeremy Ancheta. The indie rock group was formed in 2022 on West Campus, hence the name. They released their debut EP "All The Way Home" in August 2023 and have been garnering attention since then, with their first showcase appearance at South by Southwest earlier this year and a timeslot planned at Austin City Limits Music Fest coming up.
“Longhorn City Limits here we go again,” said Chris Del Conte, Vice President and Folger Family Athletics Director. “We are so excited to get Season Six underway and what better way than to welcome back our friends Midland to the Forty Acres with UT’s very own West 22nd kicking it all off. LBJ Lawn will once again cement its place as the best college football tailgate in the country.”
The free gameday concert will happen on the LBJ Lawn -- which will open at 10 a.m. -- prior to UT Football’s season opener that kicks off at 2:30 p.m.
West 22nd will hit the stage at 11 a.m., followed by Midland at 12:30 p.m.
Longhorn City Limits will also feature the Still Austin Music Lounge where those 21 and up can enjoy signature cocktails and merchandise from Still Austin Whiskey Co. There will also be a Tito's Tailgate in front of the LBJ Fountain, and Pinkerton’s BBQ will be serving barbecue on the LBJ Lawn every gameday starting this weekend.
