Pape Matar Sarr has admitted that he is enjoying playing in Ange Postecoglou’s system much more than he did Antonio Conte’s, given the freedom that the Australian affords his players.
Sarr did impress when he got an opportunity under Conte, most notably delivering an outstanding performance away at the San Siro in the Champions League.
However, the Senegalese star did not get many opportunities under the Italian, who preferred experience over youth.
The youngster’s fortunes changed when Postecoglou took over at Hotspur Way last season, with the midfielder emerging as one of Tottenham’s key players in 2023/24, playing 35 times across all competitions.
Sarr has more competition to contend with for his place in the side this campaign, with new signings, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall also staking a claim.
The 21-year-old confessed that he is now thoroughly enjoying his football since Tottenham’s system allows him the freedom to showcase all aspects of his game.
Sarr told The Sun: “In Conte’s system, we weren’t playing so much with the ball in midfield. I love the system we play now because it means I get to attack, I get to defend. This is what I want to do.
“We need to be more decisive in front of goal. But I’m sure we can put that right and have a great season.”

One of the reasons why Ange’s system is ideal for young players is because of the freedom it allows them to express themselves.
In stark contrast, Conte’s system involved a lot of tactical discipline and the Italian was less tolerant of mistakes, inducing a fear of failure in the players.
