James Maddison has hailed Wilson Odobert for his impressive debut performance against Everton, pointing out that the winger’s willingness to track back and help out defensively is a great sign for Tottenham.
It came as a bit of a surprise to see Ange Postecoglou hand Odobert a start on Saturday, with the Australian deciding to play the newcomer on the left and move Son Heung-min to the middle.
The 19-year-old repaid his manager’s faith by delivering an impressive performance, announcing himself to the Spurs fans with his exciting and enterprising dribbling.
The teenager ran at the Everton defence at every opportunity, helping the home side stretch the pitch and combining well with Destiny Udogie and Maddison on the left side.
Postecoglou praised the debutant after the game, noting that he offers something different from the other wingers in his squad due to his one-on-one ability (Football.London).
Maddison commended Odobert for his willingness to do the dirty work and help out the side.
The attacking midfielder told Sky Sports: “Wilson was a real threat in that first half, he had the bit between his teeth to show the Tottenham fans what he was about. But he also did the dirty work, you have to do that for Ange Postecoglou. So it’s a good sign.”

As Maddison mentions, the willingness to cover ground and help out defensively is a non-negotiable for Ange and Odobert certainly showed the right attitude by tracking back and making a couple of crucial interceptions, which would have pleased the Tottenham boss.
It will be interesting to see if he gets a start over Brennan Johnson on the right side once Solanke is back.
