NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- New Yorkers have one week left to apply for free groceries while school is out for summer.
The new Summer EBT program helps low-income families buy groceries over the summer when school meals aren't regularly available for children. The last day to apply for 2024 is Sept. 4, according to the state's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.
Qualifying families will receive a one-time installment of $120 per child via an EBT card that can be used at grocery stores and farmers' markets. The benefits can be used similarly to SNAP benefits.
The money will only remain valid for 122 days after it is issued, according to state authorities.
Students already receiving SNAP benefits, certified for free meals through Medicaid or already eligible for free or reduced meals through the National School Lunch Program will be automatically enrolled in the Summer EBT program.
Other families will need to apply and must meet certain income requirements. To apply, visit the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance's website.
New York City Public Schools also offers free breakfast and lunch over the summer for children 18 years old and younger at schools, parks, libraries and community centers. The food is offered through Aug. 30 and requires no registration.
