The University of Limassol (UoL) and the UoL Center for DEI, in collaboration with Lakis Greek Kitchen (LGK), present the nationwide premiere screening of the documentary ‘Queens of Cyprus’, produced by the UK-based non-profit organisation LGK. The event falls under the policy and action plan of the University of Limassol “DEI in ACTION”, through which gender equality issues are promoted, as well as issues related to the personal and professional life of Cypriot women in Cyprus and abroad.
‘Queens of Cyprus’ is a documentary that shares the global power of Cypriot women, regardless of religion or nationality, being a reference point for the achievements of Cypriot women in all areas of life and every corner of the globe. At the same time, it is a call to action, involving men and women demanding fundamental human rights at personal cost, and fighting for a better tomorrow and a fairer and more inclusive society.
Given the harm to society, gender-based discrimination, gender-based violence, sexual exploitation and abuse, structural injustices and marginalisation, are a matter for all of society. Unfortunately, the cause of gender equality is moving shockingly slowly worldwide. In fact, in too many areas, women’s rights are steadily regressing.
This is why the ‘Queens of Cyprus’ are now coming to the fore. For about an hour, the documentary takes us on a journey through stories that examine the resilience and courage of Cypriot women, and the ways in which they express their love for their homeland. The documentary includes interviews with women from different communities in Cyprus, including the First Lady, Philippa Karsera Christodoulides.
‘Queens of Cyprus’ has already been screened in New York, as part of the activities of the expatriates of America, a screening that marked the beginning of its world tour. The screening in Cyprus will take place at the Latsia Municipal Theatre in Nicosia on Sunday, September 1, 2024, and at the Ypsonas Municipal Theatre in Limassol on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
The event is under the auspices of the Commissioner for Gender Equality Josie Christodoulou.
