Jerod Mayo sure made it sound like he had not made a decision on which Patriots quarterback would start in Cincinnati to start the regular season for New England.
Entering Sunday's preseason finale against the Washington Commanders, Mayo left the door open for rookie Drake Maye to win that competition. Maye answered the call and led an impressive 88-yard touchdown drive on his first series of the night for the Patriots.
So, after that performance, did Maye leap the veteran Jacoby Brissett in Mayo's eyes? Or at least ready to play if Brissett is injured, especially after leaving Sunday's contest?
"I would like to sit here and say 100%; he is our second-best quarterback on our roster right now," Mayo told reporters, per team-provided video.
When asked to follow up, Mayo responded: "Next question. I'm not sure until I watch the film."
While that's a specific note about the talented rookie quarterback, the first-year Patriots head coach assessed that New England will still be making a decision on the starting quarterback to begin the regular season in the early days of the coming week.
With under two weeks until the first game of the season, the Patriots still have a decision to make.
