EnActe Arts is hosting a concert by Sonam Kalra and the Sufi Gospel Project to close out its New Works Festival, which runs Sept. 13-15 at the Hammer Theatre Center in downtown San Jose.
The Sunnyvale-based theater troupe created the festival in honor of its spiritual founder Jean-Claude Carrière, the late French novelist, screenwriter and actor whose work “blends East and West, ancient and contemporary, spiritual and secular.”
Sonam Kalra and the Sufi Gospel Project strive to create a similar blend. The group will perform “Sarhad – Partition: Stories of Separation” using music, theater, video and design to retell the stories of separation from the Partition of India in 1947.

A Dinner and Shakespeare Night Out on Thursday, Sept. 5, starts with seafood or chicken and ends with “Hamlet” at the Contra Costa Civic Theater. Registration is $140-$160 and includes transportation, dinner, gratuities, theater tickets and two tour leaders.
A day trip on Wednesday, Sept. 18, starts with cheese tasting at a local dairy farm, then a stop for lunch by the beach followed by a 2-mile walk at Pt. Reyes National Seashore to see and learn about Tule elk.
A leisurely 2.5-mile walk is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Deer Hollow Farm. Participants can learn about the Permanente Creek flood protection plan as they stroll. After lunch, visit the 160-year old farm, gardens, farm animals and blacksmith shed.
