PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The 42nd annual Hood to Coast relay began early Friday morning with a soggy start.
The event kicked off at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood where thousands of runners began their 200-mile journey to Seaside.
Runners travel from across the country and worldwide to compete, forming teams of eight to 12 runners who trade off throughout the trek.
Along the route, runners pass through Sandy and Portland before traveling north to St. Helens and then west to the coast.
Each leg of the race stretches from just under 4 miles to over 7 miles making up a total of 35 legs.
