Archie Gray has made a big impression at Tottenham Hotspur already, and it is no surprise that the players, staff, and fans he left behind at Leeds United are missing him. Now, Patrick Bamford has offered some insight into the situation there, and what he said to Gray upon making the move.
Tottenham acted fast to seal the transfer of Gray earlier this summer after a move to Brentford fell through.
Since joining the Lilywhites, the young midfielder has been a regular feature in Ange Postecoglou‘s first-team squad and has made the step up from the Championship to the top flight look easy.
Speaking to Leeds United News, Bamford revealed the idea of Gray moving on was inevitable, and shared the words he spoke to the teenager once the transfer was complete.
Bamford said: “When you lose someone, you generally know the season before that person is going to leave because they’ve had a good season and know what they’re capable of and someone’s going to try and pinch them.
“We knew that he [Gray] was going to move somewhere. With Archie Gray, we only probably knew the day before though. He was linked with Brentford, and he was kind of humming and harring, and we didn’t know what was going to happen.
“But then when the Spurs thing came about, that was quick. I literally rang him once we knew he was going and said, ‘look, you deserve it. Congratulations,’ wishing him well and telling him to keep doing what he’s doing.”
Various sources have spoken about how humble, mature, and amiable Gray is. Bamford confirmed as much when he shared what happened when the youngster returned to Leeds to say his farewells.
“Two days after I rang him, he came back in to see the lads and say bye because Tottenham weren’t due to start until a couple of days later. It’s not just the lads in the first team he came to say bye to, but also the people in the academy who helped him,” Bamford added.

Here’s hoping Gray can live up to the hype (and the price tag) and become a key figure for Spurs for years to come. I think he will, and he already looks the part anyway. He’s not looked out of place at all in the first-team.
