Oxford United manager Des Buckingham believes that Dane Scarlett could add a lot to his side this season and the club can also help the striker in his journey to develop into the finished product.
Scarlett has been highly rated at Tottenham for many years and is seen by many as a potential first-team prospect but his stock has undoubtedly fallen over the last two years due to his struggles out on loan.
The youngster failed to find the back of the net with regularity during his loan spell with Portsmouth in League One in 2022-23 while he played just 146 minutes in the Championship at Ipswich Town last season before the spell was cut short in January.
The youngster has also barely featured for Spurs in pre-season this summer, firmly behind the likes of Will Lankshear in the current pecking order.
The 20-year-old completed a season-long loan move to Oxford last week and will want to use the opportunity to get his career back on track and show Ange Posteocglou what he can do.
When asked about the England Under-21 man’s arrival at the Kassam Stadium, Buckingham has now told Oxford Mail: “It’s great that Tottenham have trusted us with his development. He’s a young, exciting English centre-forward with a lot of caps for the England age group teams.
“Anyone that’s been fortunate to watch him in that space, he’s certainly showcased his power and what he’ll bring to us.
“His experience in the last two years when he’s gone out on loan, he probably hasn’t got as many games as he’d have wanted, and the way that hopefully he can here, that’s the platform we’ll try and provide for him.
“There’s a lot of history in terms of this club helping develop young players, with Fin Stevens being the latest off that conveyor belt for loans. We’ve also got a good track record of working and developing our own.
“You only have to look at people like Tyler Goodrham and the others that have come through of late, so hopefully it’s a good breeding ground and environment for him to develop while aiding us to get where we want to get to.”

This loan is make-or-break for Scarlett, given the fact that he is now competing with the likes of Lankshear and Veliz at Spurs.
If he struggles to make the desired impact at Oxford, Tottenham might decide to offload him next summer.
