NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The health of New York's waterways is always being studied and now, volunteers are helping build some new places for marine life to hang out in a creek that needs some attention.
Newtown Creek forms a border between Brooklyn and Queens and connects to the East River.
Oysters were plentiful around the city before pollution and storm runoff drastically impacted water quality. Some improvements are being made. The Billion Oyster Project has assisted in focusing attention on water issues and establishing habitats.
The special stone structures and cages become prime real estate for marine life. At low tide, the Billion Oyster Project is doing this type of installation for the first time in Newtown Creek.
The Newtown Creek Alliance is a partner in the project. The group also focuses on education and community projects.
