Cam Neely Addresses Jeremy Swayman’s Contract Talks With Bruins

The Boston Bruins are less than a month away from opening training camp and Jeremy Swayman still doesn't have a new contract in hand.

It's not a cause for concern for Bruins president Cam Neely even with time dwindling to get a deal done before the start of the new season.

Neely remains very optimistic that the Bruins and Swayman will come to terms soon as Neely gave an update on the contract talks Thursday when he made an appearance on "The Rich Shertenlieb Show."

"Something will get done. There's no question," Neely said. "Not every negotiation is as smooth as you'd like it. I know our fan base would like something done by now, but I'm fully confident both sides will come to an agreement before too long here."

After splitting goaltending duties with Linus Ullmark the past three seasons, Swayman cemented himself as Boston's netminder for the present and future with a terrific playoff run in which he posted a 2.15 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage in 12 games.

Swayman's stellar play led to the Bruins trading Ullmark this offseason to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for goalie Joonas Korpisalo -- Swayman's presumed backup -- forward Mark Kastelic and a first-round pick. Neely said the Bruins "probably" weren't going to re-sign Ullmark and opted to move on from him as he heads into the final year of his deal this upcoming season.

That trade clearly signaled the Bruins are ready for Swayman to take on an even bigger role in the seasons to come. All they have to do now is get him under contract.

"Jeremy's only played 44 games in a regular season, which is still significant, but it's not 60 or 65, and (with) Linus, those two certainly helped us have the records we did the last couple of years. They're both great goaltenders," Neely said. "Jeremy, he's a guy that's so focused and so determined and he's got a lot of confidence in himself and obviously the age. So, we figured that we would ride with Jeremy."
