Bill Belichick will not start the NFL season coaching on the sidelines in a role that he's been synonymous with for decades.
The legendary head coach did not find a new home in the league after parting ways with the New England Patriots after six championships in 24 seasons.
While he takes this season to try his hand in a number of media roles, few would be surprised if the 72-year-old did not make every effort to coach again next season. For FS1's Jason McIntyre, the team that takes a chance on Belichick should embrace such a hire.
"Is Bill Belichick almost undervalued now from a coaching perspective?" McIntyre assessed on "The Herd" on Thursday. "... Yet Belichick, who's basically known as the greatest football coach ever, certainly the best defensive mind the NFL's ever seen, is suddenly chopped liver and nobody wants anything to do with him? ... It feels a little harsh."
Glory fell off in the final years of Belichick's tenure with the Patriots. Despite losing seasons and failed drafts, McIntyre believes the years of adaptability with different teams and team reinventions in New England keep Belichick qualified.
"They continually were getting creative and smart," McIntyre said. "That's how you stay on top for two decades. Shouldn't that be commended as opposed to a 4-13 horrific final coaching job and a bunch of bad drafts? Like at what point does Bill Belichick become undervalued?"
When the coaching carousel runs its course after the 2024 season, McIntyre certainly believes that Belichick should be in that conversation with a chance to reiterate his coaching abilities and further enshrine his legacy.
"America loves a redemption story," McIntyre shared. "They love it when people rise from the ashes to the top."
Somebody is gonna get lucky next offseason," McIntyre added.
