How to Dress for a (Late) Summer Picnic

For this time of year, when the weather can be a bit tricky, layering is key — especially when you’re still trying to plan for those remaining outdoor outings. But you don’t want layers that will weigh you down. (It is still pretty warm for the most part.) Enjoy those final park picnics or outdoor activities left on your summer bucket list in an outfit that can easily transition from brisk mornings to warm afternoons to cool evenings … rain or shine.

The key to sleek, stylish layers are basics that appear more elevated than your run-of-the-mill T-shirt. That’s why we love these pieces from 6397, which create an airy, colorful, cool look. On theme with our brat-summer vibe, we’ve fully embraced the Mountain Dew hue pairing this roomy limeade button-down over a matching slim-fit sleeveless tank. Styled with subtle Gap barrel jeans, we topped off the look with an olive-green metallic-style trench. Made of a Japanese iridescent cotton-blend twill, the ultralightweight coat catches different colors in the light, wavering from olive green to a shimmery gray-blue. For more emphasis on the ensemble’s neckline, we popped the lime shirt over the coat collar, adding more definition to the layers. (Pro tip: Wear the button-down and the coat open for a winglike movement that instantly manifests an “I have arrived” energy when you walk down the street.)

GP High-Rise Barrel Jeans

If you haven’t heard, barrel jeans are in. But if you’re still questioning the curvier, more horseshoe-style barrels, which we understand (might not be for everyone), you should try more subdued denim like these Gap high-rise jeans. They feature a baggy fit, relaxed wide leg, and tapered ankle. The jeans come in four different shades and styles, including a slightly distressed option we’ve included here. But, if you prefer the more “dressed-up” classic jeans look, we highly suggest the medium indigo.

Polish It Off

Throwing another color into the mix, these bright poppy Mansur Gavriel flats give the look an unexpected pop. The Dream ballet shoe is feminine but bold, balancing the top and bottom shades together. This outfit is as much about ease as it is layering. So it only makes sense to pair the look with an easy, expandable tote that can fit everything you need for the day. We love this sleek pleated Issey Miyake bag that adds texture to the outfit but not in an overpowering way.
