Adam Sandler offered fans an update on Happy Gilmore 2 during an August 20 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. During the talk, Sandler confirmed that Travis Kelce will be making a cameo in the sequel after shooting his shot for a role opposite Sandler.
“It’s good,” Sandler responded when Fallon asked how the sequel, which begins shooting next month in New Jersey, was coming along. “We worked hard on the script, man,” the comedian admitted. “We didn't want to let anyone down.”
Sandler explained that “people have been asking” him to make a Happy Gilmore sequel “for a long time,” but he wasn’t enticed by the idea until recently. “I was always like, ‘Nah,’” he admitted.
But things changed when Sandler and his longtime pal, Tim Herlihy, broke an idea for the sequel. Herlihy wrote the original Happy Gilmore alongside Sandler, in addition to many of the actor’s most iconic early movies and several of his more recent efforts.
“We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off,” Sandler said of the forthcoming sequel. “We're continuing to try to make it a movie you guys will like,” he told the audience.
“You told me there’s gonna be some cameos in there,” Fallon teased. “You know, Travis Kelce wants to be a part of this. He mentioned it on his podcast.”
“Yes, Travis mentioned it,” Sandler conceded, “and so we have a nice something for Travis. He’s going to come by.”
In an episode of his New Heights podcast back in May, Kelce expressed excitement over the prospect of appearing in Happy Gilmore 2. “I didn’t even know there was a job opening for Happy Gilmore 2,” Kelce admitted on the air. “If there is, I’ll be a f---ing extra,” he emphasized. “Anything to get around Happy Gilmore, an Adam Sandler film or set, count me in. I’ll do anything in the movie. I’ll be part of it any way I possibly can.”
Sandler told Fallon’s audience that Kelce is “a very nice guy, you guys would love him in real life. What a big handsome guy,” he continued. “Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”
Earlier on Tuesday, before Sandler’s Tonight Show appearance, Happy Gilmore fans piled into a New Jersey hotel to audition for roles as extras in the movie. Everyone else will have to wait to get a glimpse of the anticipated sequel, as Netflix has yet to announce a release date.
Sandler’s latest stand-up special, Love You, drops August 27 on the streamer.
