Stylish hatchback that’s one of UK’s best-selling cars to be PULLED from sale after 17 years – with replacement lined up

One of the UK’s best-selling cars has been pulled from sale after an incredibly successful 17-year run.

But fans of stylish hatchback can be rest assured the motor will still be available to buy from showrooms heading into the new year – while a replacement has already been lined up.

According to Autocar, a spokesperson for Fiat UK has confirmed that the Italian brand is ending production of the petrol-powered Fiat 500, as well as the Abarth equivalent models, after 17 years on the market.

The 500, known and adored for its retro design, has been a major hit globally for Fiat and sold millions of units.

The Abarth 595 and 695, both sportier, hot hatchback versions of the 500, have also gained a strong following.

Indeed, Jeremy Clarkson likened the Abarth iteration to a “mini Lamborghini.”

The decision to retire these models comes as Fiat prepares for next year’s launch of the new-shape 500 Ibrida.

The Stellantis-owned car maker is shifting its focus to EVs, with the newer Fiat 500e – released in 2020 – leading the way and will remain on sale.

Autocar were told by Fiat that order books for the 500 Hybrid have closed, but dealers hold enough stock to last until the new year – with the same applying to the Abarth cars.

The 500 Ibrida – which Autocar described as effectively being the 500e retrofitted with a 1.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine – will be launched in early 2025.

Unlike the 500 Hybrid, the 500 Ibrida will not be built in Poland, but instead will move to the Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, on the same line as the 500e.

This comes as Fiat also revealed it will be pulling the equally iconic Panda from its line-up.

That will make way for the upcoming Grande Panda – which will be a larger crossover version.

The Panda has been one of the UK’s cheapest cars, with the model one of only three available new for under £15,000.

At £14,750, only the Dacia Sandero and Spring could be had cheaper unless you opted for a microcar.

The original Fiat Panda was first released 1980 and enjoyed huge popularity, especially after a refreshed version came to the UK in 2012.
