Michael Owen thinks Dominic Solanke should be pleased with his performance on Monday even though the striker failed to get on the scoresheet.
There is a lot of pressure on Solanke, given the club record £65m fee that Tottenham shelled out to bring him through the door this summer.
All eyes were firmly on the striker as he made his debut for Spurs in their Premier League season opener at the King Power Stadium on Monday after getting the nod to lead the line over Richarlison.
The 26-year-old showcased his all-round qualities, proving a handful for the Leicester defence through the 90 minutes but he would have been disappointed at his failure to get on the scoresheet, with the centre-forward spurning some big chances.
Despite those missed opportunities, Owen insisted that Solanke could hold his head up high after that performance, insisting that the former Cherries star is exactly the kind of striker Tottenham needed.
The pundit told Premier League Productions (19/08/24 at 10:20 pm) about the new Spurs signing: “He will be reasonably happy for his first game, he made his debut and you want to have a fast start, a good start and win the game.
“It’s not gone quite perfectly. But he’s done fine. I think Tottenham have needed that type of player. They missed a lot of chances. They do create a lot and they do score a lot. But they miss a lot as well.”

It would be worrying if Solanke did not get any chances – but that was not the case.
The fact that he is making the right runs and getting on the end of crosses is a positive sign, with the 26-year-old looking likely to open his account sooner rather than later.
