Every parent has their limit — the one hill they’re willing to die on. And kids being kids, love to push the boundaries of our patience in these areas. Case in point: Andy Cohen’s 5-year-old son Ben. The Bravo TV host and his son got into a funny argument while eating out a restaurant, and it sparked a huge debate in the comments section.
“You poured this huge mound of ketchup,” Cohen says in the video, filming a basket of fries with ketchup. “You said that you poured all that ketchup so that you would share with Lucy and I, and now you’re saying you don’t want to share?” he asks, referring to his 2-year-old daughter, as Ben casually dips a fry into the ketchup.
He tries to explain himself around bites of the fry. (Relatable, Ben!) “Because,” he says. “I don’t know but I just want to ooze that deep.”
Ben continues dipping his fry in the ketchup while his dad clarifies, “It’s not deep enough to share?”
“Watch, watch this Daddy,” Ben replies, grabbing another fry and sliding it through the ketchup. “Oh, it’s too shallow to share now?” Cohen asks.
“Mm-hmm,” he answers, running the fry through the ketchup again. For some reason, this sets off Cohen.
“No, I disagree,” he says. “I disagree. You can still share.” At this point, he demonstrates by grabbing one of Ben’s fries and dipping it in the ketchup. “Thank you,” he says, putting the fry in his mouth.
At this point, Ben calmy says, “OK,” then turns to grab the ketchup bottle again. Through a full mouth, Cohen argues, “No, we do not need more!”
“I’ll tell you when I’m gonna do it,” Ben answers, grabbing another fry. “No, I’ll tell you when you’re gonna do it,” Cohen says with a laugh. At what point do you just admit defeat and enjoy your lunch in peace?
In his caption, Cohen admitted the whole ketchup battle might have been a little petty on his part. “Ketchup distribution is a major point of contention in my family! (And it’s unclear why I get so activated every single time!)” he wrote.
People in the comments quickly took sides. “Ben is 100% correct,” one person said. “I’m his lawyer, he is right,” another joked. “I don’t believe in sharing the ketchup! #TeamBen” another person on Ben’s side wrote. One person commented, “Just get your own ketchup and move on. Pick your battles.”
Others staunchly defended Cohen. “I am@the resident ketchup police at our house as well. Someone has to do it,” one person wrote. “Love how you’re teaching him to share and to not be wasteful. He’s a tough lil lawyer, but he gets it,” another said.
At the end of the day, kids love ketchup and there’s not much you can do about it. “My son used to put ketchup on his ketchup ????” someone wrote in the comments. My own 2-year-old son uses his fry as a spoon to lick the ketchup off. You gotta love kids, man!
Cohen and Ben often get into minor squabbles around Ben’s food choices. Like the time last summer when he caught his son eating candy for breakfast. “You know why you might feel sick this morning? Because you woke up and ate seven Reese’s peanut butter cups out of the freezer, didn’t you?” he asked his son in one video.
Another time, Ben hid behind a chair to eat chips for breakfast. “Ben, what are you doing hiding behind a chair with two bags of chips at seven in the morning?” Cohen asked in another video. “Uh, eating chips because I love chips,” Ben replied, explaining that he does it “every single day.” He went on, “Because chips are my favorite thing. I love chips.” I mean, fair enough, right?
Cohen is doing his best to teach his son about healthy and non-wasteful eating, but at some point, you just have to let go. If that means letting your kid have a little too much ketchup, it’ll be OK!
