THINKING of a baby name can be a difficult task for parents.
But after coming up with a short list, it’s likely you’ll want to share them with your family.
For one mother-to-be, she didn’t get the reaction she hoped for when sharing the name she had chosen for her baby.
Taking to Reddit, it was the pregnant woman’s sister who revealed what happened.
The post read: “I (28F) attended a family dinner with my mom, dad and sister (26F) yesterday.
“My sister is due to give birth soon and decided this dinner would be the perfect time to announce the name she chose for her first child.”
She went onto explain how her sister is very aesthetics-driven, and had decorated her whole house in the colour “beige”.
The pregnant sister also refuses “any colour gifts for the baby” because they won’t fit in with her “beige and grey” theme she has for the nursery.
The post continued: “So, we are all done with our dinner, we are looking at my sister as announces her baby will be named..
“Brookleeigh-Willow Rose [insert Surname]. Spelt EXACTLY like that.
“And then I burst out laughing, and said ‘You cannot be serious?’”
The sister added: “I am now banned from all family dinners.
“Is the name really that bad? Was I really a massive a*****e?” She asked other Redditors.
One thought the name Brookleeigh sounded very similar to a popular vegetable.
The comment said: “Broccoli? She thinks it’s a good idea to name her child Broccoli-Willow?
“I’m sorry but as a primary school teacher Brookleeigh sounds too close to Broccoli not to be made fun of.”
Someone replied: “I didn’t even consider Broccoli. Good shout!
“My first thought was more ‘oh hey, another one for r/tragedeigh,’” referencing the Reddit thread where people ask if their name is a tragedy.
One comment read: “Oh sweet dear vegetable, I mean broccoli, I mean Brook..ly? That kid will be laughed about her name behind her back her entire childhood, but hey, mom gets to be unique.”
Another Redditor thought the child would be made fun on when it’s older with this name: “So is Brookleeigh pronounced Brooke-lee? Because I can guarantee you kids will be calling her broccoli.”
Another said: “I probably would have laughed, too.
“The poor child will spend its life explaining and respelling its name. Will probably end up being called ‘Brook’ and your sister will end up fussing about that.
“Not sure why you are banned from family dinners – did other family think that was a ‘great name?’”
Another wrote: “Exactly, is it nice to laugh at a name choice? No of course not. But when someone says something that ridiculous they shouldn’t be surprised that people laugh.
“It’s better that she figures out it’s a daft name now than when there is an actual child to be teased and bullied for it.
Willow Rose would be a fine name.
The original poster added an update: “After writing this post I decided to call my sister and apologise… I said I was sorry for laughing…and offered to treat her to lunch as an apology.
“Understanably she was reluctant to forgive me, but she did which I am thankful for.
“She said she was hurt by my actions which I understood but was willing to look past it.
“And if anyone’s wondering, the name is staying. I didn’t comment at all on it.”

At 35 weeks pregnant, by far the trickiest part of pregnancy for me in the past few months (minus the insomnia and countless night-time wee breaks!) has been trying to decide on a baby name.
The dilemmas are endless…
My partner and I went for a private scan to find out the gender as early as we could – partly due to the fact we thought it would make baby naming so much easier because we’d only have to come up with a list of names for one gender rather than two.
How wrong we were…
I was absolutely thrilled to be told I was expecting the baby girl I’d already dreamed of, but being one of the last of my friends to fall pregnant, I’ve had countless conversations over the years with excited pals discussing their top baby names…something which I wish I could go back in time and un-hear.
With each friend mentioning at least 10 possible monikers, I can’t help but feel like several are now a no-go even though I know it’s something that none of them would mind in the slightest – it’s a total me problem!
The debate comes up time and time again on social media forums – can you choose the same name that was a “potential” for a friend’s baby?
It’s a very divisive topic and opinions are always mixed…and I don’t want to be THAT person.
While some will argue there’s thousands of other names out there to choose from, others will say you need to choose YOUR favourite…after all, there’s no guarantee that person will even have another baby.
Then there’s also the issue of finding a name you adore…only to research it online and read one negative comment amongst hundreds of positives that you just can’t shake off.
I made that very mistake when I fell in love with a certain name (I won’t reveal it because I don’t want to ruin it for others!) …only to see someone point out that it constantly gets autocorrected on a phone to something rather rude instead.
So, back to the drawing board we went..
Just five weeks to go and it looks like our little one is going to be known as ‘baby gal’ for a little while longer!
