Submissions for the Canada Council for the Arts’ Prix de Rome in Architecture – Professional, Prix de Rome in Architecture – Emerging Practitioners, J.B.C. Watkins Award: Architecture and Ronald J. Thom Award for Early Design Achievement will be accepted from now until October 5, 2024.
The Canada Council for the Arts grants annual prizes in architecture to acknowledge the accomplishments of architects, professionals, and students at different phases of their careers.
The Prix de Rome in Architecture – Professional is awarded annually to either a practitioner of architecture or an architectural firm who/that has completed their/its first built works and has demonstrated exceptional artistic potential. The prize encourages the development of contemporary architectural practice by supporting the recipients’ travel around the world to develop their skills and their creative practice, and to strengthen their position in the international architecture world.
The Canada Council Prix de Rome in Architecture – Emerging Practitioners is awarded to a recent graduate of a Canadian school of architecture who demonstrates exceptional potential in contemporary architectural design. The prize recipient will have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of contemporary architecture culture by visiting a selection of works of architecture abroad, and to expand their professional skills through an internship of their choosing at an architectural firm outside of Canada.
The J.B.C. Watkins Award is offered to an individual who has completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture in Canada, and who will pursue post-graduate studies in a different country, ideally Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Iceland.
The Ronald J. Thom Award for Early Design Achievement was established in 1990, and is given to a practitioner of architecture or an architectural firm. The successful candidate must be in the early stages of a career or practice and must demonstrate both outstanding creative talent and exceptional potential in architectural design. The award honours Mr. Thom’s life and work and celebrates the buildings he designed and the encouragement and inspiration he gave his colleagues.
The deadline for submissions to the awards programs is October 5, 2024.
