August is usually a quiet month for the island’s art scene. New exhibitions do not typically open but in Nicosia one artist is presenting a new showcase in the middle of August.
Sia Kurz will present a solo art exhibition at Opu Collective in Ayioi Omologites, running for just a couple of days. The showcase will open on Friday and last until August 13 showcasing elements of the island and memories from the artist’s childhood.
“What Am I But a Fragment? casts a light on the distinct landscapes of Cyprus, which are fragmented into sub-categories, revealing the unique and historical beauty of the island,” say organisers. “Through this collection of abstract, surreal paintings, writings and photographs, artist Sia Kurz poses herself as a fragment of her homeland and reflects on her life in Cyprus. A reality built upon dream-like combinations of the mundane and treasured traditional elements – Kurz carves and blends her childhood memories into the canvas, visually representing the island she grew up on.
The art pieces travel from the Bellapais Abbey to Pomos and Fythkiotika weaving as the artist sees herself as part of the island and re-imagines her emotional geography of Cyprus.
