We do like bringing you information on some of the truly great games you may well never have heard of here at Readwrite Gaming. You are going to hate us for this one because, if you haven’t played Warsim – The Realm of Aslona before you are going to take one look at the screenshot and go – much like yesterday’s coverage of The Adventurers – no, this is not for me. Somewhere deep inside your RPG-loving head though you are going to think, well, there must be a reason they said that, and give it a try anyway. And that is when we apologize to your family for ruining your life.
Your new life will be Warsim. Your new family the characters you meet on your adventures. As one of the quotes on its Steam page says, “Warsim is simply amazing; it’s as if Crusader Kings II and Zork spawned a love child. An incredibly deep text-based kingdom simulator for fans of Dwarf Fortress, Kenshi, and Dominions 5. Hidden gem.”
It’s no longer a hidden gem because now you know about it. Elephant in the room, it is a text and ASCII-based game – much as the original Dwarf Fortress was. You take over a rule of a kingdom that is procedurally generated at the start of the game and from there on can do – well pretty much anything? Make visits to your throne room and speak with your citizens perhaps, or visit the local fighting pit and bet some gold on the outcome.
Some of the choices you will face can be outrageously funny as can your choices? Absolutely fed up of Bard’s coming in and (actually) singing your songs. Execute all the bards! How you rule will be up to you as you try to manage your kingdom to make it prosperous and safe, or, should you wish, a dystopian medieval hell-hole. It’s up to you and both are equally fun.
Warsim is on sale on Steam at the moment for $5/£3 – a saving of 60% and is rated as Overwhemingly Positive, but it’s only a daily deal so you will need to be quick – not that it’s not worth the full price. The dev is great, the game is funny and it is super easy to lose absolute hours in it. Why are you still here?
