A CLASSIC motor that was dubbed “Japan’s Ford Capri” can be yours for a bargain price today.
The model was ranked among the top 100 cars in history by the former Top Gear star in a 2001 special film.
The TV legend made an hour-long one-off episode for petrolheads in which he simply ranked all 100 of his favourite motors past and present.
His prestigious list ran through a real who’s who of the automotive world at the time.
Top entries included beloved models like the Ferrari 360, Lotus Elise and the original Ford Capri.
However, lurking in 87th place was a bit of a hidden gem in the form of the Mitsubishi Colt Starion.
Clarkson even described the motor as Japan’s answer to the legendary Capri – high praise indeed considering the latter’s immense popularity.
Debuting in 1982, the car was named as a contraction of the Star of Arion the ancient Greek singer who, so the legend goes, escaped capture by pirates by riding away on a sea horse.
It was part of the golden generation of affordable Japanese sports cars that also included the Nissan Z, Honda Prelude and Mazda RX-7.
However, like many of its contemporaries, its popularity steadily declined and it was discontinued in 1989.
As a result, Starions are relatively rare today and are considered something of a collector’s item among enthusiasts.
Despite its cult status, the Starion remains quite cheap today and fans can now pick on up at a bargain rate on eBay.
A 1985 turbocharged version has been listed for sale on the auction site by Northumberland-based dealer A Robinson Autocentre.
This particular car has only done 74,000 miles, meaning it averaged fewer than 2,000 a year since it was produced.
Pictures accompanying the listing shows that it comes with an original owner’s manual and service history and remains in excellent condition.
Rge silver bodywork doesn’t appear to have a scratch on it and features the Starion’s trademark sweeping bonnet and central air scoop.
