Where every major character ended up in the fourth and final season of Netflix's 'The Umbrella Academy'

  • Netflix's "The Umbrella Academy" concluded with a six-episode fourth season released on Thursday.
  • In the final season, the Hargreeves teamed up to stop another extinction-level event.
  • The siblings succeeded and also eliminated the many alternate timelines to restore a single universe.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for season four of "The Umbrella Academy.'"

After five years, Netflix's adaptation of the Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá comic book series "The Umbrella Academy" has come to an end.

The six-episode fourth season, released on Thursday, picks up six years after the timeline is reset in the season three finale. After being thrust into a new world, the now-powerless adoptive Hargreeves siblings go their separate ways. The dysfunctional family eventually reunites to rescue a mysterious woman named Jennifer (Victoria Sawal).

The rescue mission proves to be more complicated. In order to eliminate the infinite alternate timelines and prevent an extinction-level event called the Cleanse, Five devises a plan that requires him, Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Viktor (Elliot Page), and Lila (Ritu Arya) to sacrifice themselves.

The finale ends with the siblings successfully eliminating the other timelines in favor of a single, peaceful timeline inhabited by their loved ones and other characters from past seasons of "The Umbrella Academy," including Allison's daughter Claire (Millie Davis), Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins), and The Handler (Kate Walsh).

Unfortunately, the sacrifice means that the Hargreeves and Lila have been erased from history. Although no one has any memory of them in this timeline, the finale pays homage by including an end-credits scene that shows eight marigolds rapidly blooming in a patch of soil near a tree.

Where's what happened to every major character in the fourth and final season of "The Umbrella Academy."

After the timeline is reset at the end of season three, Luther takes a job as a stripper.

When season four picks up several years after the timeline reset, Luther is shown capitalizing on the fact that he has a normal human body, instead of the part-ape physique.

He's seen flexing his muscles while performing a striptease at a quiet bar with few patrons. Although Luther isn't the smoothest or most natural professional dancer, the money is just enough for him to get by.

Because the Umbrella Academy doesn't exist in this timeline, Luther squats at the abandoned and run-down Hargreeves Home for Wayward Boys.

Diego works at a parcel delivery service called RPS and lives in the suburbs.

Season four kicks off with Diego and Lila, who revealed she was pregnant during the previous season finale, throwing a sixth birthday party for their eldest child Grace. Diego and Lila also have twins.

As the season progresses, we see the cracks in their relationship. Diego is insecure about his job and thinks his talents would be better served at the CIA. He's also unhappy living with his in-laws. Meanwhile, Lila leaves the house often, secretly going to meetings for a group known as The Keepers (who believe in the existence of other timelines) because she needs an escape from their "suburban hellscape."

After a dinner in which Ben spikes the siblings' shots with marigold, Diego is thrilled about the return of his powers.

Lila struggles with the transition from a full-time assassin to a mother of three.
Ritu Arya as Lila on season four, episode six of "The Umbrella Academy."

"The transition from full-time assassin to full-time caregiver to three small children and one chunky husband is no picnic," she tells Five when they run into each other at a Keepers meeting in the season four premiere. "I needed to get outside the house, OK? I saw a sign and took a chance. It's cheaper than therapy."

Lila and Five go on to work undercover investigating The Keepers and the alternate timelines, agreeing to keep it a secret from Diego.

During episode three, Lila tells Diego that they need a break from each other to reassess their marriage. In the following episode, Lila tells Diego that she still loves him, but she's frustrated by his constant complaining about his job and his in-laws.

While Lila and Five take a train that allows them to travel between alternate timelines, they get lost and are unable to find their way back to their universe.

They're stuck alone together for seven years, moving from timeline to timeline, sometimes getting chased or attacked in the process. Eventually, Lila gets tired of running so she and Five briefly settle down together in a timeline that has a serene greenhouse. They end up kissing and striking up a romance, which immediately ends once they find their way back to their reality.

Although they spend years hopping from timeline to timeline, Lila and Five are only actually gone for a couple of hours in their universe. Naturally, Diego is furious when he learns that Lila and Five carried out a secret relationship.

In the finale, Diego and Lila agree to send their kids and the in-laws to the train so they can escape the Cleanse.

Just before sacrificing themselves, the couple makes amends, with Diego saying that he finally sees her for who she is and Lila saying that she didn't mean to hurt him.

Allison reunites with her daughter Claire.

At the end of season three, Allison finds herself reunited with her daughter Claire from the original timeline and her husband Raymond Chestnut whom she met in Dallas in the 1963 timeline. It's unclear what exactly happens between Allison and Ray, but when season four picks up six years later, she's a single mom. In the third episode, Klaus makes a comment about how he took care of Allison "since Ray walked out."

In the reset timeline, Allison is still an actor. She's the face of a laundry detergent commercial but has bombed auditions and isn't exactly an A-lister.

Regardless of her career, Claire continues to be her main priority. In the finale, she sends her daughter on the train with Lila's family so that she can live in a single utopian timeline.

In the reset timeline, Klaus is sober, a germaphobe, and a protective uncle to Claire.
Robert Sheehan as Klaus in season four, episode four of "The Umbrella Academy."

Without his power of immortality and the ability to connect with spirits, Klaus is liberated and happy. He's three years sober and lives life cautiously, keeping a close eye on Claire to protect her from the dangers of the world. He's also very wary of germs, wearing a face mask and gloves when he reconnects with the other siblings. Klaus embraces his power-less life because he's more responsible and trusted by his niece.

But when Klaus finds himself on the brink of death in episode two, Allison makes him drink marigold (the element that gives the siblings their power). After Klaus' powers return, he gets into a dicey situation with a man named Quinn, whom he owes $40,000. Klaus ends up getting buried alive. Luckily, he's able to bust out of the casket at the same moment that Allison digs up the grave to save him.

Klaus aptly sums up his relationship with his family in the finale, just before their sacrifice, telling them, "I love you guys, but you are all assholes."

Viktor creates a new life for himself far away from his siblings in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Elliot Page as Viktor on season four, episode four of "The Umbrella Academy."

Viktor becomes the owner of a bar in Nova Scotia and enjoys the distance from his family, but he reluctantly agrees to go to Grace's birthday party. However, he doesn't make it to the party because he's kidnapped by a mysterious man named Sy Grossman, who uses the tactic as a way to get the Umbrella Academy members' attention and ask for help retrieving Jennifer, whom he claims is his estranged daughter.

Later in the season, when the siblings go to Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) for help, Viktor unleashes years of rage and resentment that he's kept inside regarding this father. This version of Reginald isn't the same one who raised him, but he's similarly blunt and detached.

During episode five, Viktor saves Reginald from getting shot. In response, he tells Viktor that the other Reginald was wrong to treat Viktor like an outcast.

Ben is a far more prominent character in season four, and the "Jennifer incident" is finally explained.
Justin H. Min as Ben Hargreeves on season four, episode two of "The Umbrella Academy."

The version of Ben in season four is from the Sparrow Academy in another timeline, so the Hargreeves aren't his siblings. This version of Ben was convicted in 2019 for a crypto scam and served four years in Avalon Federal Correctional Institution. When he's released on probation, Luther picks him up from prison, and Ben inevitably gets roped into the siblings' hijinks — namely, the Jennifer rescue mission.

In the season four premiere, Ben steals a jar of marigold and spikes the siblings' shot glasses to trick them into acquiring their powers again.

When Ben meets Jennifer during the rescue mission, they immediately feel a strong connection despite never having interacted.

This makes sense because in the original timeline that version of Ben was killed on October 14, 2006, during a situation referred to as the "Jennifer incident."

Using technology from Reginald, the siblings are able to regain wiped memories about the incident that took place the night Ben died. They learn that they were sent on a mission to locate and destroy an unnamed dangerous weapon in a container. But during the mission, Ben disobeyed orders and opened the container, finding a girl named Jennifer inside and grabbing her hand to pull her out. After Reginald was notified, he arrived on the scene and shot Jennifer and Ben dead.

It's revealed that Jennifer is dangerous because she contains a particle called durango that was synthesized by Abigail, Reginald's wife. When durango interacts with marigold, the two elements cause an unstoppable physical reaction that can lead to the extinction of the world — known as the Cleanse. So Reginald killed Ben and Jennifer because he knew their physical interaction could lead to the end of the world.

In the present timeline, Reginald sets out to hunt Ben and Jennifer because one of the hosts must be eliminated before the reaction is complete. Reginald is too late, though, because Ben and Jennifer make out and their powers collide, triggering the Cleanse.

The virus eventually takes over both their bodies and they morph into a large, grotesque creature that grows exponentially.

Five figures out the key to preventing the end of the world.
Aidan Gallagher as Five on season four, episode four of "The Umbrella Academy."

During the finale, Five travels to another timeline and encounters various versions of himself. One of these alternate Fives explains that there's only supposed to be one timeline. Instead, the original timeline was shattered into an infinite number of alternate timelines in an infinite loop of time. All the alternate Fives have given up on trying to fix the issue because the problem is the Hargreeves siblings, who are doomed to save or destroy the world repeatedly.

When Five returns to the main timeline, he tells his siblings that their births are what caused the creation of multiple timelines. When their birth mothers were infected with marigold, one of the side effects was the shattering of the timeline.

To put an end to the chaos, Five, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Viktor, and Lila allow themselves to be engulfed by the Cleanse creature so that the marigold and durango can cancel each other out — causing them all to cease to exist.
