OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) – Five people were hurt following a wild chain of events in south Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
Oklahoma County Sheriff’s deputies said it started when they pulled over Leland Meece, 38, in a gas station parking lot. He was wanted on warrants for felony domestic violence with strangulation and possession of stolen property.
The sheriff’s office released body camera video of what unfolded when they pulled the car over.
"Step out of the car right now. Go to the ground right now," said one deputy.
Another told Meece to put his hands out his window. Meece then took off driving down Pennsylvania Avenue, sparking a chase.
Deputies said Meece reached speeds of 50 miles per hour in busy traffic before flying through the intersection of Penn and 89th. Deputies then called off the chase.
"Our deputies determined that it was too dangerous to continue the pursuit,” said Aaron Brilbeck, public information officer for the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
A few yards down Penn, Meece crashed into three different drivers. His passenger, Callie Dotter, was reportedly partially ejected from the car.
The crash happened right in front of the Kingspark neighborhood.
"We seen a bunch of lights lighting up the living room and we went outside. There was like five police cars, a bunch of people standing around," said Cody Cobb, a neighbor.
After the crash, Meece and Dotter took off running through a business park. Deputies were finally able to track the suspects down, throw them to the ground, and handcuff them.
"You know how many people you (expletive) hurt? Put your hands behind your back," said one deputy on his body camera.
In total, five people were hurt including the two suspects and three drivers. Deputies say the drivers were elderly. Meece now faces additional charges including felony eluding and assault and battery on a police officer. Dotter was wanted on several outstanding warrants.
