When it comes to collegiate volleyball, the University of Texas stands as a powerful opponent. Competing in the Big 12 conference and having been named tournament champions on eight different occasions.
Next season, they will also welcome back 2023 National Player of the Year Sarah Franklin. Wisconsin and Stanford look to make an impression, respectively.

Florida State is one of the oldest SEC schools, and their women’s volleyball team has made 18 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1993. Florida State Vols are known for performing consistently at major collegiate tournaments – even reaching semifinals!
University of Tennessee volleyball team, known as the Lady Vols, are another SEC powerhouse who compete both within the SEC and NCAA Division I tournaments. Since 2000 they have made 12 NCAA appearances – seven since 2000 alone! Their renowned home court also helps maintain their dominance within college volleyball.
The University of Pennsylvania is one of the premier women’s volleyball programs at college level, having won seven NCAA Tournament Championships under an outstanding coach who remains one of the most dominant figures in NCAA history. Wisconsin also makes waves, welcoming back national player of the year Sarah Franklin after she underwent surgery for blood clots this summer.
Stanford women’s volleyball program has long been revered among NCAA Division I programs, winning nine national championships since 1981 as well as appearing in 17 tournament finals. A large contingent of Stanford alumni has gone on to play professionally or even on Olympic teams.
Stanford boasts an abundance of veteran talent this year, led by Kendall Kipp (opposing hitter) and Kami Miner (setter). Both Kipp and Miner are repeat first-team All-Americans while outside hitter Caitie Baird and libero Elena Oglivie earned second-team recognition; middle blocker McKenna Vicini joined Francis on CSC academic All-America teams as well.
Under Hambly’s direction, Stanford volleyball has skyrocketed. Over seven seasons on The Farm, she compiled an outstanding 171-37 record and helped 13 AVCA All-Americans become national championship contenders. Looking ahead, 2023 looks poised for another run at national glory.
The Wisconsin Badgers are perennial national contenders who have reached three out of the last four Final Fours. This year alone they produced 29 All-Americans and captured four major Big Ten conference end of season awards.
Wisconsin lost only one set this season against Nebraska – and in that match their defensive performance stood out most prominently. Dana Rettke blocked five Nebraska aces in the second set as UW gained what would have otherwise been an insurmountable lead of 2-0.
Though UW loses junior Sarah Franklin to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, they’ll return national player of the year MJ Hammill and many talented seniors – which could give UW another shot at winning in Tampa next fall! UW has long had its sights set on this goal – seeing all those teammates celebrating with confetti falling and teammates hugging one another will certainly be memorable sight.
The University of Texas is widely respected for its sports programs, with women’s volleyball being no exception. Over their history, the Longhorns have made 22 NCAA Tournament appearances and 16 conference championships to their name.
In 2019, they also defeated NCAA-champion Baylor during regular season play and were led by junior outside hitter Destinee Hooker who was honored as Big 12 Player of the Year and received first team All-America honors by AVCA.
Longhorn players have won Olympic gold medals in multiple positions, such as best outside hitter Jordan Larson and middle blocker Haleigh Washington. Additionally, they’ve collectively won 33 AVCA All-American awards throughout their careers; Olympic rookie Rettke stands out as an especially notable member – becoming the youngest female five-time All-American ever!
