Tim Walz doesn't own any stocks: What to know about Kamala Harris' running mate's personal finances

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has something in common with nearly 80% of Americans: He is not directly invested in the stock market.

According to a financial disclosure filed with the State of Minnesota in January, Walz does not own a single stock.

Nor does he own a business or have a book deal, a common source of extra income for high-profile politicians.

In fact, Walz even slept in his Capitol Hill office for a time, as many other lawmakers of modest means sometimes do.

He told the New York Post in 2018 that he had shared an apartment in Washington, DC, with former Rep. Patrick Murphy — paying $1,800 each a month — until the Florida Democrat lost a Senate bid to Republican Sen. Marco Rubio in 2016. After that, Walz started sleeping on a cot in his office.

"I'm not complaining,'' Walz said at the time. "It's just figuring how to make all your finances work."

According to financial disclosures from his time serving in the House, Walz made up to $2,500 a year from renting a room in his Mankato home. He later sold that home for $304,000 in 2019, according to Zillow, after he was elected governor.

In Congress, Walz also sponsored the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, a bill that formally banned insider trading and established the current system of periodic disclosures for lawmakers trading stocks.

In the House, Walz earned the same $174,000 annual salary that all rank-and-file lawmakers have made since 2009.

As governor, he's made even less than that. When he took office in 2019, the official salary was just $127,629. As of 2024, it has been increased to $149,550.

If he is elected vice president, he will make $235,100 per year.
