Crown Heights residents celebrate 3rd win in 'Greenest Block in Brooklyn' contest

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Crown Heights residents celebrate a significant achievement as Lincoln Place between New York Avenue and Nostrand Avenue clinches its third victory in the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest, organized by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

This remarkable feat showcases the community's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and neighborhood beautification.

Althea Joseph, a resident for 18 years and one of the founders of P.L.A.N.T. (Preserving Lincoln's Abundant and Natural Treasures), expressed her enthusiasm about the win.

"It's actually the third win of the greenest block in Brooklyn 2024, which is a program that BBG has put together for blocks to green, do urban greening with a focus on the trees and tree beds," Joseph explained.

The success of Lincoln Place is rooted in its strong sense of community.

"This street is very much community and we welcome all ages. We have babies born on the block and we have the neighbors that do a lot on the block, financially, physically, and emotionally. Great support," Joseph emphasized.

The P.L.A.N.T. group consists of core group leaders and residents. They operate as an ad hoc group, mentoring other blocks interested in starting similar initiatives.

Adrian Benepe, President of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, highlighted the importance of community spirit in determining the winner.

"Really what makes a winner is the community spirit," Benepe stated.

He also praised the block's creativity.

"Clearly, you can look at this block and see the extraordinary levels of creativity. They've involved artwork, they've recycled materials, they've got kids doing things, they've got educational things about pollinators,"

The Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest, a key initiative of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, aims to promote community greening, beautify streets, and foster neighborly relationships. This year's competition saw participation from over 100 blocks across various Brooklyn neighborhoods.

As the celebration unfolds, Joseph captures the essence of Lincoln Place, a shining example of community spirit and environmental care.

"This block is a beautiful block; it is a community, caring, and green," she said.
