Brussels Airport will be renewing the top layer of runway 01/19 in the coming weeks. This runway was last extensively renovated in 2016 and now a renewal of the top asphalt layer is required. During these works, at certain locations new cabling will be placed, as well as new gutters for better drainage. In total 126,650 m² of asphalt will be replaced.
The renovation works will be carried out from 7 August to 1 September 2024 and are scheduled during the day between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.. During these works, the runway will be closed. The works will exceptionally continue during the night from Friday 23 August until Monday 26 August. Due to the proximity of the works at the crossing with runway 25L/07R, runway 25L/07R will also close for two days on 24 and 25 August, until 5:30 am on 26 August, as a safety precaution.
By executing these works in the summer, the weather conditions are optimal, and the works will take the least amount of time. During the works, it will not always be possible to apply the PRS (Preferential Runway System), but the works are scheduled in such a way to limit the impact.
It is the air traffic controller skeyes that decides on the runway use, based on runway availability and weather conditions, with the primary aim of ensuring the safety of air navigation.
These runway works should have little impact on airport operations, though (limited) delays cannot be excluded. It is important to maintain the runways and keep them in optimal condition to ensure the safety of air traffic in the future.
