FONDA (NEWS10) – The Village of Fonda has officially lifted the boil water notice that had been in effect since June 27.
“We knew, and I put out a public release, that we had good turbidity levels. They were at safe levels; we had removed the particles in the water, and it was safe,” said Fonda Mayor Bill Peeler.
The village website advises residents to flush faucets, appliances, and hot water tanks, as well as replace water filters to ensure safety and cleanliness.
Mayor Peeler shared a personal experience to emphasize the importance of flushing lines: “I was with my father yesterday, and he is 97. He had a little brown in his water, but that’s just a matter of clearing your lines. So what I did was run his water for about five minutes, and it was crystal clear!”
The resolution of this issue ends a months-long effort to restore water service following an incident that caused the initial shutdown. Mayor Peeler explained, “Initially, it started with an equipment failure and shutdown that emptied our tank. Normally, an alarm would notify our water operators, but that did not happen because communication lines were cut off.”
The mayor confirmed that these communication lines have now been restored and assured that water testing is conducted daily. Any issues will be promptly communicated to residents via the village website.
“We have chlorination in our system, like many places, and with that, we need to maintain a good balance of chlorine throughout our entire system,” Peeler said, adding that self-test kits are also available to residents, though they are not as comprehensive as the village’s tests.
Residents expressed their trust in the safety of the water. One resident remarked, “I’ve lived here all my life. Yes, I’d drink it.”
The village continues to prioritize the safety and quality of its water supply, ensuring residents are well-informed and confident in the measures taken.
