For those who all along considered President Joe Biden’s victory a de facto third term for Barack Obama, this headline in the Washington Post is a reminder that with Kamala Harris we are facing the possibility of a fourth term for the former President:
Harris hires Obama campaign veterans to join 2024 effort, replacing Biden loyalists : David Plouffe, Stephanie Cutter and Mitch Stewart are joining the effort.
Michael Scherer and Tyler Pager begin by noting that
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris hired a battery of new senior advisers to her campaign this week, moving swiftly to replace lifetime loyalists of President Biden with Democratic campaign veterans, including multiple leaders of Barack Obama’s presidential bids, according to people briefed on the campaign shifts.
David Plouffe, a top strategist on both of Obama’s presidential campaigns, joins Harris as senior adviser for strategy and the states focused on winning the electoral college. Stephanie Cutter, the deputy campaign manager for Obama’s reelection, who has been working in recent months with Harris, is the new senior adviser for strategy messaging. Mitch Stewart, a grass-roots organizing strategist behind both Obama victories, will become the senior adviser for battleground states. David Binder, who led Obama’s public opinion research operation and previously worked for Harris, will expand his role on the Harris campaign to lead the opinion research operation.

All of the new hires will report to campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon, another veteran of Obama’s two campaigns. She managed Biden’s 2020 campaign and built his 2024 operation from the White House before moving to Wilmington, Del., this year. Harris took control of Biden’s campaign as soon as Biden announced he would not seek reelection, an operation consisting of more than 1,300 employees and more than 130 offices. She asked O’Malley Dillon to remain in charge.
Also among the new hires are veterans of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
On one hand, this is smart politics, especially given Harris’ record of abysmal performance on the campaign trail. Until now, Harris has only faced one significant competitive election against a Republican, the AG race in California, which she almost lost while other Democrats won statewide races by double digits. Thanks to California’s jungle-primary system, she won her Senate seat against a fellow Democrat in the general election. She then failed to get to a single primary contest in 2020 after entering that primary cycle as one of the favorites, melting down in two debate exchanges with Tulsi Gabbard and utterly failing to inspire Democrat primary voters.
If anyone needs an Obama rescue, it’s Kamala.

From the moment she stepped before the cameras to ever-so-reluctantly become the de facto Democratic nominee, Kamala has made it clear that her primary focus in the campaign would be abortion.
She calls it reproductive rights
, but since her goal is to strip human rights from unborn women, that term is laughably albeit tragically inaccurate. …
For some reason, we are encouraged to believe that the VP is a role model for all women, and that she speaks in our name. Without any official mandate or referendum, she has been anointed as the voice of American women, chosen to save democracy by saving the right to what Erica Jong colorfully wrote about as the Zipless You-Know-What in her legendary novel “Fear of Flying.” I call it Fear of Consequences.
With Harris’s lightening-like assumption of the Democrats’ presidential nomination, what do the early returns tell us?
In battleground states, where the election will likely be decided, “Harris and Trump are tied in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona, according to the [CBS News/YouGov] poll,” Nick Robertson tells us. “Trump has a 1-point lead in Wisconsin and a 3-point lead in Georgia and North Carolina, while Harris has a 2-point lead in Nevada.”
Finally, there are the comments of CNN political commentator and former senior adviser to Barack Obama David Axelrod. He “encouraged Democrats to curb their enthusiasm around Vice President Kamala Harris.”:
JESSICA DEAN, CNN: Yes. And look, she has a lot of momentum. But if you do look at the polling, this is still a really tight race. This is going to be a hard fight for either side — tough based on the numbers we’re seeing right now.
AXELROD: 100 percent. There’s a lot of irrational exuberance on the Democratic side of the aisle right now because there was despair for some period of time about what November was going to look like.
Now people feel like there’s a chance. But it is absolutely Trump’s race to lose right now. He is ahead and he is ahead in most of the battleground states. They are close, they can be won by either candidate. But there’s a lot to be determined in the next 90-whatever days — 96 or what it is left.
So yes, I think it’s a wide-open race, but Trump has the advantage right now and nobody should — nobody should be, nobody should be — everybody should be sober about that on the Democratic side.
While Harris’s first two weeks were the expected honeymoon, “Harris faces new tests in the coming days as she works though key decisions — including her vice presidential pick, with the potential to disappoint elements of the coalition,” according to the AP’s Seung Min Kim and Jonathan J. Cooper.
“She has not faced the level of scrutiny that presidential candidates typically face. While she has kept up a busy schedule of public appearances, she has rarely taken questions from the press and has not sat for an in-depth interview. After four years advocating for Biden’s positions, she’ll have to stake out positions of her own on the political controversies that divide Democrats.”
