EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- An alleged robber was shot during a struggle with an off-duty NYC Correction officer in Brooklyn on Sunday, according to law enforcement sources.
Ryan Straker, 19, was shot in the abdomen during a fight with the 54-year-old officer at 721 Snediker Ave. in East New York at around noon, police and sources said. Straker allegedly punched the cop and stole his cellphone before he was shot, according to sources.
It was unclear if the gun was fired intentionally.
Straker was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he is expected to survive.
“Twenty years, and this is the first time I heard of something like this happening here,” Larry Farrell, a neighbor, told PIX11 News on Sunday.
Straker was later arrested and charged with robbery, assault, and criminal possession of stolen property, police said. His arraignment was pending Monday.
Sources said the off-duty officer was not charged.
The NYC Department of Correction declined to comment.
