News and Notes for Monday, August 5th, 2024
The Guardians became the first team to score at least five runs off Corbin Burnes this season, but still lost to the Orioles 9-5.
Williams gave up eight hits and two walks leading to six runs in four innings. That’s not going to get it done against one of the best teams in baseball. To me, it appears Williams has to be able to reliably throw his secondary stuff for strikes to get hitters off of sitting on his fastball. It’s fixable stuff, but tough to have your sophomore pitcher go through those growing pains in a playoff chase. Tim Herrin and Nick Sandlin were also shaky, but it was nice to see Connor Gillispie make his major league debut and go three innings giving up only one run against the organization that drafted him, especially considering he had a 5.80 FIP in Columbus. Eli Morgan had a scoreless inning against the Orioles
Where did Connor Gillispie and Eli Morgan come from? Well, Xzavion Curry and Joey Cantillo went down to Columbus, and news emerged that Tanner Bibee’s next start is being pushed back to the Minnesota weekend series after he experience shoulder tightness. This is not ideal, and one can’t help but be concerned, but it’s roll with the punches season. Logan Allen will start for the Guardians against the Diamondbacks tonight.
Meanwhile, Guardians hitters mostly did their parts against the Orioles. Two hits a piece for Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, and Andres Gimenez and a three-run homer for Josh Naylor.

Five runs against Burnes should win you a ballgame. But, it didn’t because Guardians’ starting pitching is their weak spot. Hopefully, they can fix that in the next month. Also, fix Nick Sandlin or replace him because he’s getting hit HARD.
Around MLB:
The White Sox lost their 20th game in a row, seemingly all to the Twins, but it was definitely Minnesota scoring 13 on them yesterday.
The Royals came back and won against the Tigers’ pen.
