Pakistani authorities have confirmed the twelfth case of polio in the Punjab province of the country.
Pakistani media reported that the latest case of polio was identified on Saturday, August 3rd, in the Chakwal district, involving a six-year-old boy.
Earlier, Pakistani officials had reported two cases of polio in the Jhal Magsi and Killa Abdullah districts of Balochistan province.
Since the beginning of 2024, a total of twelve polio cases have been recorded in Pakistan across Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
The National Health Department of Pakistan has labeled the increase in polio cases as a significant challenge, emphasizing shortcomings in the detection and eradication efforts of the disease.
It is noteworthy that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries in the world where polio has not been eradicated.
Concerns persist over the persistent presence of polio in Pakistan despite extensive vaccination campaigns and international efforts. The recurrence of cases underscores the need for continued vigilance and strengthened healthcare measures to eliminate polio from the region entirely.
