Paris Olympics 2024: Amit Rohidas Handed One Match Ban, To Miss India’s Semifinal Clash Against Germany
New Delhi: Star India hockey player Amit Rohidas was given an one-match ban after he received a red card in the quarterfinal clash against Great Britain in the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday, August 4. As a result, he is all set to miss India’s semifinal clash on Tuesday. In the second quarter of the match against Great Britain, Rohidas was dribbling in the midfield when his stick collided with a rival player, resulting in a red card from the on-field umpire. Despite playing most of the match with only 10 men, India secured the win in a shootout, with PR Sreejesh standing out as their top performer.
“These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches,” the official statement from Hockey India read.
In the quarterfinal game, India produced a great defensive performance despite playing with only 10 players in the field to clinch the clash in the shootout.
Harmanpreet Singh gave India the lead in the 22nd minute, but Lee Morton equalized just five minutes later, putting England back in the game. Despite the setback of the red card, India held their ground with Sreejesh making a couple of spectacular saves. In the shootout, India flawlessly converted all their chances and denied England twice, securing a thrilling 4-2 victory.
