EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Police said a man who was shot in East New York Sunday is now in police custody.
Ryan Straker, 19, was shot in a Brooklyn building while police said he was allegedly committing a series of crimes.
“This a productive block. It’s family-oriented, no violence, no crime,” Stephen Elliot, a neighbor, told PIX11 News.
Police said they responded to a call at 721 Snediker Ave. around 12 p.m. and found Straker with one gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The man shot was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he is expected to survive.
Police are now charging that man with robbery, assault and criminal possession of stolen property.
“Twenty years, and this is the first time I heard of something like this happening here,” Larry Farrell, a neighbor, told PIX11 News.
“I heard the ambulance arrive. There were so many police present,” Claire Battle, another neighbor, told PIX11 News. “Where you live, you would like you know what’s going on."
But neighbors still don’t know for sure what happened. Off camera, some neighbors said a retired court or correction officer allegedly shot Straker while he was allegedly committing the crimes. Police would only say their investigation is continuing.
“How can I feel? Just like everyone else, I feel sad about it,” Farrell, the neighbor, told PIX11 News.
