Lakshya Sen is the first male Indian shuttler to qualify for an Olympics semifinal. Only PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal are the Indian badminton stars to win an Olympics medal.
New Delhi: History beckons Lakshya Sen as the India is set to face Danish Viktor Axelsen in the high-octane semifinals of the men’s singles badminton event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday. No other Indian male had reached this far in the sports at the Olympics. A win for Sen on Sunday will confirm India its first medal from a male shuttler at the Olympics. Only two Indians have won badminton medals at the Olympics before – Saina Nehwal (2012) and PV Sindhu (2016, 2021).
Unfortunately, Sindhu bowed out from women’s singles in the quarterfinals two days back at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Irrespective of result on Sunday, the 22-year-old from Almora is guaranteed a medal match at Paris Olympics. If Sen wins against Axelsen, he will have a medal assured and will gun for gold in the final. In case he loses, Sen will take on either Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn or Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia for a bronze.
Axelsen holds a 7-1 head-to-head record against the Indian. Sen’s only win over his Dane counterpart came at the German Open last year.
