Mets Minors Recap: Sproat Dominates With 11 Straight Strikeouts

The terrible weather up and down the East Coast did not stop Brandon Sproat from showing off his elite stuff. Sproat, who struck out a career-high 13 batters on Friday, achieved an unreal feat–retiring 11 straight FisherCats via strikeout.

Sproat’s 11 straight strikeouts were more than Tom Seaver‘s major league record of 10 consecutive batters, which stood alone for more than 50 years. The minor league record for most single-game strikeouts in a row stands at 12 by Yusniel Padron-Artiles in 2019, who was playing for the Boston Red Sox’s Single-A affiliate, Lowell Spinners.

Due to inclement weather, Friday’s game between the Columbus Clippers and Syracuse Mets was been postponed. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 5:05 p.m. ET.

The Rumble Ponies’ offense was shut down until the ninth inning in their 7-3 loss Friday evening. FisherCat pitcher Andrew Bechtold allowed the first six Ponies to get on base in the ninth frame and left the game without recording an out. Despite putting up three runs, Binghamton could not complete the late comeback.

Ryan Clifford was on base three more times tonight, raising his season OPS to .843, the best on the Binghamton team.

Brandon Sproat was unreal tonight for Binghamton (Double-A).

He struck out 11 in a row and induced a total of 21 swings-and-misses.

His final line: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 13 SO (81 pitches)

Brandon Sproat was pulled right before the thick of the rain fell, but he poured in the strikeouts. In one of the most impressive minor league outings ever, Sproat struck out 13 FisherCats, including k’ing the last 11 he faced. He is surely heading toward Triple-A Syracuse and, if he performs up to David Stearns and the front office’s criteria, maybe a September call-up?

High-A 

 Brooklyn Cyclones (47-52) 0, Aberdeen IronBirds (51-48) 1 SUSPENDED

Friday’s game between the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Aberdeen IronBirds was suspended. The game will resume the contest at 4:35 PM tomorrow with Aberdeen leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth. A seven-inning nightcap will follow after the conclusion of the opener.

Baro and Hernandez have been stars in the St. Lucie line all year. Both have started August well after tearing up July–Baro picked up his fourth triple of the year and Hernandez increased his on-base streak to six games.

Hartwig made his second rehab start with St. Lucie, throwing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Hartwig represents another major league-caliber arm that is on his way back to being available for the big league club.

DSL Mets Orange split their doubleheader on Friday–the squad was led by CF Edward Lantigua who went 1-for-4, 2 RBI, and two walks. DSL Mets Blue dropped their Friday fixture against the DSL Tigers– SS Diover De Aza went 2-for-4, 2B, and 2 RBI.
