Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Jonathan Pryce is entering the “The Crown” episode “Willsmania” as his 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Supporting Actor. “Willsmania” aired on December 14, 2023, and is the fifth episode of the Netflix drama’s sixth and final season.
In “Willsmania”: Charles (Dominic West) tells the Queen (Imelda Staunton) and Philip (Pryce) that he thinks William (Ed McVey) is struggling to cope with Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) death. William is invited to tea with the Queen and Philip, but is instead met by Charles. He accuses Charles of driving Diana to her death. Philip meets William and proposes that his frustration lies with the legacy left by his mother, but since he cannot be angry at her, he is angry at Charles instead. William visits Charles and they share a hug as Philip, reflecting on his own mistakes as a father to Charles, looks on. “Willsmania” was written by Jonathan Wilson and Peter Morgan and directed by May el-Toukhy.

This year marks the third and fourth Emmy nominations for Pryce (he’s also up for Best Drama Guest Actor in “Slow Horses”). He was nominated for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor in 1993 for “Barbarians at the Gate” and again in 2010 for “Cranford.” For this 2024 contest, he is competing against “Shōgun’s” Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira, “The Morning Show” trio of Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass and Jon Hamm, as well as his “Slow Horses” castmate, Jack Lowden.
“The Crown” received 18 total nominations this year, including Best Drama Series, along with bids for six of its actors, as well as writing and directing.
